One Mastersstudentassistantship is immediately available at The Soil Management and Integrated Cropping Systems’ lab at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale in the Department of Plant, Soil, and Agricultural Systems. The selected student will evaluate new methods of cover crop establishment in corn-soybean rotations to minimize yield penalties while mitigating nitrate loading through tile-drainage and maximizing soil health in Illinois. The selected student will be co-chaired with Dr. Shalamar Armstrong at Purdue University and will have the opportunity to collaborate Dr. Andrew Margenot at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Opportunities to develop further research questions also exist. The applicant should possess a Bachelor’s degree in soil science, agronomy, ecology, environmental science, or any other relevant disciplines. Applicants should have a strong academic excellence, strong organizational, quantitative, and communication skills and should be able do field work. Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position, including having reliable transportation andhaving and maintaining a valid driver’s license. The candidate will complete coursework necessary for a Masters degree in Plant, Soil, and Agricultural Systems at SIU Carbondale with an emphasis on soil science(SIUC Degree Requirements). The assistantship includes tuition waiver, $18,000 stipend, and health insurance.
